Discover the depth of "MetalScape- Mother & Child at Laguna Pueblo". It is a metal collage. The image is inspired by a photograph that surfaced in my research about women at Laguna Pueblo. The picture is said to be about 5 years old but there were no credits to the photographer. To me, the image honors women and their dedication to their children. It depicts the craftsmanship in pottery and weaving which Kawaik people from Laguna are renoun for.
The figures are cut from copper. Hair is pierced for texture and detail. Oxidation is used throughout for shading. The mother's dress is constructed from an unusual piece of copper screen. Using it, I was able to suggest a checkered plaid pattern in the fabric. The metal has been cut, bent, folded, molded and textured to give the whold image a 3-D effect. The woven blanket is cut in nickel and depicts the striped pattern typical in their weaing style. it is draped over the mother's head and around her shoulders. The rest of the blanket has fallen to the floor and is still partially rolled up at their feet. The large piece of pottery is a typical representation of their pottery style. It is pierced in nickle and features motifs that they are famous for in their work. The brass background has been treated with a bath of vinegar and salt which leaves this fabulous patina rich in golds, rust, and green colors. Each segment is secured to the background with rivets.

MetalScapes are collages constructed from multiple base metals. Segments are pierced, textured or oxidized in order to vary shapes, textures, and contrasts in a scene. Embossing and stamping may also be incorporated. Some shapes may be domed for a three dimensional effect. All the design segments have been riveted to the metal back plate. The completed collage is mounted in a matt suitable for framing.
